 Just the basics. 
If you want to create a character, the best way to go about this is to do something you're familiar with. Creating a character based off of your personality, whatever you think that is, would be easiest. For example, if you're a humorous person in real life, a character that would be easy to write for you would be a character who is humorous.
Once you've decided on their personality, you need to give the character personality. How do they talk? Do they say things like "Stupid poopy butt" or "Unreasonable intellectual?" How would they act in front of other people? Would they throw a tantrum and chew on their clothes, or would they be constantly fixing their tie/bow? Things like "Stupid poopy butt" and throwing a tantrum would suggest that the character is a child or is childish, where as using words like "unreasonable intellectual" and constantly straightening their clothes would show that the character is very professional.
Once you have the basic idea for a character, you want to come up with a name that has some meaning behind it.
Once all of this is done, you want to start creating a "profile" for that character, which will be explained in the next lesson. :)
