Rape in a backstory...

I've recently started doubting using rape as a backstory for one of my female characters. Arguable a co-main character and the main love interest for the main character. Any criticism from this? Is it overused? Is it just a cliche?

P.S. The entire book is already written and I was rereading it and some random post on Tumblr started me thinking.

I wouldn't worry too much about avoiding cliches. Just look at the new Star Wars film. It was point for point essentially the same plot as the first SW film. Does that make it bad? No. In fact, I thought the film was awesome.

Cliche expressions--especially if used more than once--can be annoying. But plot points? That's just a matter of tropes. And if you go to TVTropes.org, I think you'll find there is a trope for *everything*.

So, yeah, as long as you do something interesting with it, it doesn't matter if it's been done before. Go for it.
