Welcome!16 Years AgoHey everybody!
My name is Clint I am the moderator/creator of this little thing. I don't know how everyone wants to go about this so feel free to suggest ideas and what not. I'm not nit picky about content so if the conversations stray from publishing that's just fine. No rules here, just have fun and let loose! All that aside I was going to see if everyone would be okay with making a separate "topic" for 1.) Traditional print, 2.) Digital/online, 3.) Print on demand (POD)-style, 4.) etc. If so just let me know or make the thread yourself if you like. Hope everyone has fun with this and hopefully we can all learn some valuable information from this.
- Also let your friends know about this group! I think a lot of people could benefit from it!
And if you get published, brag about it! Post your title, ISBN, etc. so we can go check it out. You never know, we might have the next great novelist or poet among us. And you can say, "I knew that person when they were on Writer's Cafe!"

[no subject]16 Years Ago I published my first volume of poetry on Lulu.com when I was 13. With the exception of how long it took to write the content, it took maybe a week. This is a self-publishing company with a print-on-demand method. It is free to the author/poet; however, because your book is among millions of others, it is not guaranteed to sell.
The best way to increase sales is to purchase an ISBN. On Lulu, this costs approximately $100 per book (last time I checked - it's been a while). For those who do not know, an ISBN allows other places (like bookstores and libraries) to purchase and sell your book. No matter what, do not expect to make much money. Publishing is not for that, especially with self-publishers. On Lulu, the prices are incredibly high, and you only get a fraction of the revenue. Another way to get published would be magazines. A great one is The Atlantic. This was where Emily Dickinson, Edgar A. Poe, and a few others submitted to. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, literary magazine in the US. Poetry.com also has a contest for my fellow poets out there. One contest, I believe, is worth $10,000 and a spot in their yearly anthology. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoI think when it comes to getting something published, you need to make sure the market is right for your anthology, etc. As for literary agents and publishing companies I just use to Writers Market. It's a great resource to go to in trying to get your book published. It has a great list of companies and agents that are quite good if you ask me. I'm in the works of getting my first book published and writers market has helped me immensely.
Please know that getting published is not an easy process and your book will go through many re-writes in terms of becoming a professional writer. I'm only nineteen and I have researched the market down to it's toes. It is a very intense process and you will need to make sure that your book is the work of a professional and not the work of a newbie. It will show when you release a query letter, or some type of summary pertaining to your book. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoHello I am Stacey I just recently got my book published with Publish America. It was a pretty quick process and I was through it in 4 1/2 months. The name of my book is Destiny's Journey. It is a poetry book with a story line. Romance genre. The company does not charge you one penny to have your work published. They are considered a traditional publisher. www.publishamerica.com

[no subject]16 Years AgoHey there!
Not published yet, but I hope to be this summer. I hope to publish my vampire/parody/action/thriller novel, The Coming of Night.
I'd encourage people that are looking to be published not to go after a publishing company as much as an agent. If your work is good, the agent will find the best publisher.
I know a lot of published writers and this is what they say to do. :D

[no subject]16 Years AgoHey. well, I've not been published yet. But I'm really trying for it. I'm currently working on something called Blood Thirst Plague. It will hopefully be my first. I try to vary my writing sometimes so that I could have different genres to bring to the table of any publisher; something for everyone really. I want to be published before the year is out and until then I will finish the books I have started and hope to catch the right eyes for my stuff.

[no subject]16 Years AgoHi thank you for the invite. I'm an editor and unpublished writer. I gave up on trying to get my own work published about eight years ago and at the beginning of this year I started Vamplit Publishing. Vamplit's aim is to publish new authors' work free of charge and to work with writers to edit, develop and publish their novels, intially as ebooks. We are accepting unsolicited horror, Gothic, vampire and fantasy manuscripts at present, but we my have to further restrict this in the future. I am not a big fan of self publishing or vanity press, as it used to be called. Our official sales launch is September 1st, when we go live on our website ebookundead.com and publish our first ten novels. I spend a lot of time on social writing sites looking for new authors and am always amazed at the quality of writing I find. I run competitions here, on my websites, vamplit.com and vamplitpublishing.ning.com and on Firstwriter.com. The response so far has been amazing. If anyone would like me to read their novel or would like any help with editing, just let me know. I think that, with the advent of new technology and access to the internet, eventually large publishing houses will change the way they work, but for now our aim at Vamplit Publishing is to read everything that is sent to us and give as much feedback as we can to help any writer achieve their dream. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoHello, I'm unpublished as far as my novels go, but this year I did get a flash fiction story published on The Flash Fiction Offensive. That's an e-zine, no pay, but a credit to my name (: So I'm hoping that this year will change my status. I just finished rewriting my fantasy novel The Other Side and have a proof coming from CreateSpace.com, Amazons POD site. I have gotten proofs from them before, I really like their quality, so if I like my story, I might release it to be sold on Amazon and through CreateSpace. If I do, I'll post the link here :D I've written 4 novels total, and would eventually like to see them all in print, but I also write short stories, and have recently fallen in love with flash fiction. I've thought about compiling my flash into a volume, but that hasn't happened yet. >.< SO, thank you for having me, and it's nice to meet you all. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoMy only publishing was two poems in a local newspaper. It was for the memorial page published on the anniversary of my brother's death. I can't go into much detail without giving personal information, but I will say that the poems were rather armature for me (they were published about two years ago I think) and my parents almost didn't have them published because of the cost per word of the memorial. The only reason they went to print was because the editor liked them.
Other than that, I haven't been published. I do hope to have a novel out someday. Someday... |

[no subject]16 Years AgoI am currently working with a literary agent, but before I got hooked up with them I published my books on Lulu and also CreateSpace. I was happy with both as far as quality goes, but CreateSpace has been less expensive so far. They assign an ISBN for you and since they are an Amazon company, your work is automatically placed for sale on the Amazon website as well as CreateSpace. I wish you all the best and while I look for a publisher, I'm happy with what I've done and it's great to see my books in print.
Good luck to you all! Melissa Kesead |

[no subject]16 Years AgoHas anyone published using WoFW, (or something like that)? I forget what its called. But if you've used it you'll know what I'm talking about. If you have, can you explain what it is and if you've been successful with it?

[no subject]16 Years AgoHeck - I honestly believe that it was one of my worst works ever. Perhaps it's just because I've improved so much in 3 yrs.
Now it just serves as a way to impress myself. Not that I brag much at all. I have to admit though that it feels good when you're having an off day. Just let it marinate on the list of accomplishments. Ignore it's uselessness once you're out of the pits. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoI'm currently working on two novels, I have one that is about 50% done I've sent the synopsis to a few Ebook and print publishers, I have two responses from Samhain and Black Velvet, both were positive, one is reviewing what I have done thus far and the other wants the full and completed manuscript. If they've asked for it I take it as a good sign, their responses were quick I sent the synopsis on Sunday and got the response on Thursday of the same week. Hopefully it will go well. I Thank god for grammer and spell check everyday! LOL. So far both novels are under the Romantica/Erotica Genre. I have more mainstream work that is roughdrafted right now.

[no subject]16 Years AgoHi I published last year with publish america,it was a mistake. Basicly they overcharge for books and bookstores will not carry them. Mostly because they will not take back books. I got a great review in metrotimes detroit so the book still should sell about five or six thousand copies by the end of the year. I was very lucky, because otherwise I dont think I would have sold any. Also working for publish america hurts your chances of getting an agent and makes it very hard to earn respect from the real publishing companies. However if you think you can sell your own book and can make your own heat go to publish america. They will publish anything. I mean anything. |

[no subject]16 Years AgoI'm Emily and I am an unpublished author. I've been working on my novella/novel, The Attic, for about 6 months now and I plan to self publish it before the end of the summer. I think I'm going to do it through Lulu, even though I've heard somewhat negative things, because I'm not in it for the money. I just would love to have proof that what I wrote is worth reading :-)
