Imagine for Franz Kafka


It must be
a revelation to wake up
one morning and discover
the inner vermin lying on your bed,
to look below yourself
and be confined to every conflict,
a living thing, a multitude
of squirming legs spread out
evenly�
the horror
one must feel in that instant
when the fear confides in you
that the pitter patter of bad weather
outside your window is only the beginning.
Now imagine that you are loved
because you embarrass openly,
imagine the joy of pretending
you loved your family; then
imagine hanging
on the ceiling, imagine the suffocating
feeling of dying amidst your furniture.
You begin to understand why
you did not fear. Death has always been
a familiar case you carried yourself in,
and now the sound of your alien breath
surrounds you.
Imagine if you had to choose
to live or die; you would not choose.
You would choose
the pestilent remains of solitude
until a door opens to freedom,
and a breeze sweeps the foreign parts away.
Imagine how beautiful it would be
if everyone believed that all this
is a story.
