The best opening line in a novel is?

I think the title says it all really..................They say you can judge a novel by the quality of the opening line..................So what do you think is the best opening line you've read?+++++++++++I'll start you off with my favourite++++++++++“No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.” ― H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds

Only how about CATCH 22........................A savage and funny anti-war novel...........It's one of the greatest books of the 20th centaury. A must read............ "It was love at first sight."

I will always be partial to the classic: "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." It's a real Dickens lol
