Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoNOT by yelling or getting mad, or making them feel guilty or like they aren't worth anything. They should help them through it/ support them (in a good way).

Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoI think the last thing a parent should do is get angry with their child. They should try to be understanding and calm about it. They should do their best to try to find out why their child has felt so depressed to the point they would do that to themselves, then find a way to help their child.

Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoI believe the parent should listen and try to understand why the child is feeling this way and why they are hurting themselves. But at the same time, they do have a right to be shocked and a little angry. However, they should not pin all of the blame on the child. There could be a lot of things that may be going on with them, so the first thing they should do is listen and try to help as much as they can.

Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoThe only thing a parent can do at first, is talk to the kid and let them know that they love them- that it does not matter what they are struggling with- they love them and will do whatever it takes to help them feel better.
They can try to get the child to talk about their feelings, if it can be done in a non-threatening, non-judgmental way, but no pressure should be used. If the child does not feel comfortable talking about the situation- which they probably won't- the parents should accept that and let them know it is okay- but that they are always ready to talk. Regardless, the parents should get in touch with a mental health professional as soon as possible. The last thing they should do is try to take care of the problem themselves. The causes of depression, cutting and other destructive behaviors are complex and vary from one person to the next. They should find a professional they feel good about. If the first one does not feel right, find one that does. Throughout the process, it is important to keep an open mind. If medications are prescribed, consider the fact that, combined with therapy, they can and do save thousands of lives every year. And medication/therapy is not meant to be forever. Only until the person learns how to keep themselves mentally healthy. But if it is prescribed long-term, it is similar to the situation of a diabetic or others whose body needs extra help to get them through each day. Having suffered from depression for many years before finally summoning up the courage to seek help, I know how dark it gets on the other side- how little most people seem to understand about how bad it can get. Even telling someone every hour of every day that you care about them and love them makes little difference if they no longer believe they are salvageable. People who are suffering need love and care, regardless of their behavior. It is the parents' responsibility to provide the needed help, not ignore the problem, hoping it will go away. |

Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoMy mom said that if she catches me cutting or anything like that she's taking me to an exorcist because that means I've got demons in me.
Yeaah, I don't think the parent should yell at their child and tell them something like that because I believe that could make it worse. The child might believe because they have demons in them that it doesn't matter whether their actions are good or bad because it's the demon's fault if they xo something wrong, right?
I think the parent should talk calmly with their child and try to understand the child's problems and how they might feel. Then try to give them some good advice and help them out.
Push them in the right direction.
Plus by sitting calmly down with your child and helping them instead of yelling will incourage the child to come out openly with their problems instead of hide them away.

Re: what do you think?12 Years AgoThe parent should talk to the child/teen about it kindly, they should hug him or her and use a gentle voice. The parent shouldn't make him/her ashamed, or guilty and not force or push them to do anything they don't want to do. Cutting is a delicate subject that is talked about by too many very carelessly.
