jackets and bread

jackets and bread

A Poem by Sunflower

i wasn't born to
hate myself
no one wants to
look in the mirror and
despise their reflection

i was only ten
when you told me to
"suck in my stomach"
when i was trying on swim suits

i was merely thirteen
when i tried on that jacket from
sixth grade
and it didn't fit
but you told me it could
if i worked out and got my
arms in shape

i was barely fourteen
when you told me i
didn't need another
small piece of bread
even though i was still hungry

and you wonder why i used to
skip meals
why i counted calories
why i hate my body

but maybe for once
something is
your
fault
