how i remember being seventeen: stupid and happy, only … was it that long? why, it must have been a million, at least. at least, i know who i am now, and what i am: torn-up, tattered. penelope schmott sat on a stone wall, reading Cohen and good beautiful Bradbury, and during some poetic passage, fell off, poor child; the king’s men, and the king himself, could do naught with the ragged and jagged pieces. two green eyes spilled on the ground, wondering what had happened, crying, remembering how it was to be just seventeen, only … oh, was it that long ago? i loved being seventeen stupid and happy and whole
