Darling, Did Life Forget You?A Story by chloe oliveathe first flash fiction i ever did. not very flash fiction but i like to believe it still has some value.“Time of birth: 6:49 AM!” Fluorescent light traces the curve of her cheek, gooey with blood. Her brown strands of hair are thinner than thread. Her lips quiver. Her eyebrows pinch. She cries, the shock of her clarity sundering my chest open. We made it. She cries, then..." nothing. Machines whir around her small silence. Storms of frenzied beeps swallow her. Five minutes pass and she still doesn’t cry. The nurses eye each other. Solemn. Quiet. “6:50 AM.” My heart wails. Everything goes numb. And I wonder... What life flashed before her eyes? Sixty seconds. Darling, did life forget you? Pensive blue seeps in from the morning outside. My vision vignettes around the edges. I watch her in the middle of the bedlam. It hits me that I don’t have a name to place on her gravestone. © 2025 chloe oliveaAuthor's Note
