My child

 

 

Tenderly,

I look upon you.

so innocent,

of this darkened world.

Your cry,

resonates throughout me.

 burdens heavy,

I carry for you.

Harsh world lightened,

by your care free smile.

gently kissing you upon the cheek,

world brightens for a moment.

weights of life,

lift with the sight of you.

For my love so freely given,

I will protect you always my child.

I love poetry about the love of a child. I can actually imagine my own kids as I read this...kissing them softly upon their little pillow cheeks that feel like plushy marshmallows. I imagine holding them as they sleep, probably one of the most comforting moments of being a parent. Nothing beats the feeling of having a child fall asleep upon you. You never stop being a parent, either. Even after they turn 18 and are out the door. That's what resonates with me about this poem: the last line. 'I will protect you always my child.' because there is no doubt within my mind that a parent will always parent their child, even when they grow up.
