Phantom Car

Are you sure that, that car behind you,is real?

Imagine this, you are driving on a stretched road at night. You don't see any cars on the road, any streetlights. The only light source is your own cars' headlights.

You keep looking at your right side view mirror,  to see if there are any cars behind you; there isn't so far. Halfway through 15 miles to be exact, you look out your back window, still no cars. 

You focus back on the road in front of you. Now remember, there aren't any cars on the road, but your own. If that is so, then,  why do you see headlights behind you ? You  just looked behind you a minute ago, and no one was there....right ?
