Mary didn't know
falling snowflakes or shining ice
in Bethlehem

autumn trees baring branches
children beneath play at devilry
the eve of the saints

snowmelt exposes birthing green
a season of ash, sacrifice, and death
for Christians

Author's Note

Contemporary haiku poetry doesn't have to be bound by the 5-7-5 rule that we're familiar with, but I do try to stay focused on natural and seasonal imagery to create that sensation that the form is known for.

This is probably my second attempt since primary school at writing any kind of haiku.
