Islanders: The Fairies of Do

Islanders: The Fairies of Do

A Story by Abishai100
"

A sports-writer recounts his apparent 'sighting' of a magical 'fairy-creature' at an Islanders (ice-hockey) game in NY.

"
I'll sign off instead with this love-letter to ice-hockey, inspired by the movie Mighty Ducks (Emilio Estevez)!
DISCLAIMER: I have no official ties to the team mentioned in this fan-fiction work and intend only to present portrait of New York distance.

I love New York. It's where I work as a sports-writer, covering stories about one of its two celebrated ice-hockey teams, the colorful and terrific Islanders. I love New York.

My name's Amlan Satan, and I've been covering the Islanders games in New York for some time now, and I wrote special pieces about the team's string of Stanley Cups in the early 1980s and the new-gen stars like Tavares. I consider myself an objective sports-writer who's simply in love with the Islanders ice-hockey!

Now, NY is a place of terrific headlines/stories and also great drama and intrigue and challenge(s). You pick up a copy of the Post on your way to work in New York and might find my storyline about the recent Islanders drama/triumph! I love New York.

ISLANDERS FAN: There's something 'electric' and 'cool' generated by the outstanding Islanders spirit in the rink for game.

Our Islanders stadium/rink, the UBS building, is quite a marvel! It's got great seats and hospitality and makes for great viewing experiences of Tavares' Islanders teams in this new era of ice-hockey in North America. I love New York!

Well, this story is not actually that simple about Islanders (NY) spirit(s). I saw the mystical-magic film Photographing Fairies, about the odd supernatural inquiries surrounding the actual/real existence of winged fairy-creatures who deliver special messages of hope/deliverance and power-prestige in times of great depression. I started thinking about the fans of the Islanders (NY).

Now, why, you might ask, would a 'fairy' (mythic winged tiny humanoid messenger from the Earth!) want to see or augment/enhance an Islanders (NY) game? The ice-hockey of the Islanders is quite something. Perhaps such 'fairies' might want to disclose their appreciation of the 'tradition' of sport itself, of the Olympics (Ancient Greece) and the idea of sportsmanship-driven teamwork...and peace!

"A fairy is a type of mythical [winged] being or legendary creature found in the folklore of multiple European cultures, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural, or preternatural" (source: Wikipedia).

I've played amateur ice-hockey and consider myself an ice-hockey fan/atic and consider my experiences in the terrific North American sport reflective of my satisfying work writing about the Islanders team itself, and my memories playing are great!

When I write about the Islanders, I think about the general feel of the ice-hockey game(s), the fun athletes and all the fans in the stadium, and of course, what makes ice-hockey so awesome in New York (USA).

This is where our story diverges from the ordinary, readers! I was at an Islanders rivalry game at the UBS Stadium when I thought I spotted what had to be a real fairy! IT was a green-and-blue colored flute-playing tiny female fairy flying around somewhere behind me where I was sitting in the fan-area of the stadium. I tried to take a snapshot of it with my iPhone but it vanished.

I honestly didn't know what to think, but the next day, I wrote up my 'ordinary' but exciting story about the Islanders defeating their rival Avalanche team in the UBS Stadium the night before, when I spotted the flute-wielding fairy in the fan-seats area! I wrote in my story, "Perhaps the Islanders victory prompted 'special magic' creatures to play flutes in the stadium."

Now, we all know the Islanders game(s) may at any given time draw in special 'spirits' and celebrity fans who're almost like fairies! We appreciate what they add to for our general New York love of ice-hockey and fanfare.

However, who the heck would think that a 'real' fairy would be present during an Islanders (NY) ice-hockey game? What makes New York so special is that it's become a global symbol of multicultural traffic/commerce/life. Perhaps the fairy I saw at the UBS Stadium during the Islanders game reminds me of what makes NY so special...and peaceful.

"Ice-hockey (Islanders) can be a rough game, but it draws our fantasies about playing with right stuff" (Amlan Satan, POST).

I don't know what to make of my apparent fairy-sighting during the rivalry Islanders-Avalanche game in UBS Stadium in NY. However, what I do know is that I'll never stop loving ice-hockey...or all its 'magic' fans.
