Bend It Like Gino!A Story by Abishai100Narrated tale of an Indian book-seller in Miami who, along with her household, root for her kid-sister Anjali who dreams of pro-football cheerleading.
A sports-cheering tale of the American Dream, inspired by Bend It Like Beckham but this time around about 'football' and not 'soccer' as they call it in differing parts of the world! Thanks for reading (signing off),

==== I live in a quaint Miami suburban home and work from home as an online merchant of rare books. My name's Archie and I've worked as a stewardess for Indian Airlines before I began this new home-work in Miami. I live with my family, my parents, my mother's sister and their two kids, and my younger sister Anjali who's a Hurricanes (football) cheerleader. Our house is nearly perfectly American! ![]() I've had several offers of marriage in Miami while networking online during my book-sales, which has brought me a comfy fortune for house-earning for my family! As a woman of Asian-Indian origin(s), I consider myself almost like the 'elder-sister' sanity-diplomat of our Miami household/family. ![]() My online book-sales have boasted great sales and offer incredible (rare) editions of iconic works by writers as varied as Flaubert and Dickens. The book-salesmanship is something that's brought me laurels/accreditation and pride for my parents. This is a great job after leaving my work as a stewardess/flight-attendant, and in process, I've read some of these masterworks (e.g., Flaubert). ![]() My parents are typical traditional/conservative Asian-Indian parents from Delhi. They moved to the US with my sister and me when we were young so we'd attend the University of Miami. I already graduated, but my younger sister Anjali is now a sophomore-year student there and also a Hurricanes (football) cheerleader. My parents are proud of our household as they should be, since it's a rather 'nice' portrait of the proverbial American Dream. ![]() However, this story/tale is not about me or my book-sales but about my younger sister Anjali and her precocious interest(s) in football-cheerleading and her hope(s) of becoming a pro-football cheerleader someday, perhaps a Dolphins girl. ![]() Anjali has been a fan of the Hurricanes (football) since she was a teenager, and she's collected numerous sports-cards of the legendary Hurricanes QB Gino Torretta who took the Hurricanes very far and showed national audiences why Miami is the site of rather incredible college sports in a very competitive national conference which has produced much dollar(s) for American media/magazines. ![]() Anjali's best friend from the University of Miami, Kyrie, is also a Hurricanes (football) fan, but she's not a cheerleader, although she's got these outstanding connections to the Dolphins cheerleading squad executives and hopes to win a tryout for both herself and my youngers-sister Anjali! ![]() My mom's sister and her two kids also live with us after she got divorced from her first husband. Our household is big and Indian and happy and proud, and we all cheer for Anjali on Hurricanes-TV and hope she'll win that dream of someday becoming a pro-football cheerleader. Our family is hoping she'll make us all happy with her TV-spots and remind us why our Indian family is so close...and darling. ![]() It's ironic that Anjali (my kid-sister) is a football-cheerleader (Hurricanes), since, in India, it's 'soccer' and 'field-hockey' that are way more popular/marketed than football. Furthermore, in India (and everywhere else around the world outside America!), 'football' is what we call 'soccer' and this double-name irony/coincidence hasn't hampered the tones/flavor(s) of sports-markets in the USA and in fact it spells-out why my sister Anjali's dream of using her experiences/laurels with Hurricanes football to get into the 'pearl-gates' of national (pro) football dancing. I'm so proud when I drop off Anjali to the team-bus and watch her board to prepare for yet another exciting (televised!) Hurricanes football game in Miami. ![]() Will Anjali (and her best friend at the University, Kyrie) both win position(s) at the Dolphins cheerleading pyramid after graduating from university? We all believe in them and hope this will be the case for them. Until then, I'll keep selling my books and reading them to my auntie's kids...praying for the future sports-media success(es) of my younger sister Anjali who just might create the 'right stuff' of American Dream(s) reflective of the modern national drive(s). Anjali sometimes jokes (in smart-reference to her favorite Hurricanes-QB Gino Torretta), "All I have to do is miraculously 'Bend It Like Gino'!" ==== "Money is everything" (Ecclesiastes) © 2022 Abishai100 |
