Carlito was out of jail finally and was cleared of his sentence by his slick lawyer-buddy Kleinfeld, an advocate of suspect intelligence, placing this former NY heroin legend back onto the streets where he soon discovered he'd be pulled back into a world of utter darkness and self-made intrigue with crime and corruption. That's not what he envisioned. He wanted to sell used-cars as a legitimate salesman and was then lured into the job of running an underworld nightclub without any obligations to the underworld itself. However, such a promise is rarely kept. Carlito found himself mired in a mafia-mess with Kleinfeld, his lawyer-buddy with very suspect intelligence. After taking a 'boat-ride' to the Riker's Island prison water where Kleinfeld was to pick up a fled mafia-boss, Carlito witnessed his suspect lawyer-buddy Kleinfeld bloody murder the mafia-boss and knew instantly he was back into the Hell he promised to leave after prison.

Now, he'd decided that one last-chance at redemption involved his old jaded girlfriend Gail, now a dancer at a nightclub and hopeful ballet-instructor. He promised her everything. However, this last Kleinfeld 'ditch' required Carlito to escape the son of the murdered mafia-boss at the train-station from which he'd flee the Hellmouth(s) of NY alongside Gail. He ran around the station like a fleeing insect while Gail waited by the train itself, as the mafia-son and his goons, having already murdered the 'tragic' Kleinfeld, were pursuing 'street-signs' that Carlito was roaming around seeking to 'flee' the Big Apple. Carlito made a brilliant escape-maneuver by the escalators and evaded the mafia gargoyles before reaching the train to kiss Gail, only to be shot-dead by one last 'adversary' --- an old narcotics 'rival' from his old days of crime (Benny). Thus ended a tragic 'faerie-tale' which reminds one that the proverbial American Dream may take any shape --- even that of a 'reform-minded' devil.
