Two special Dartmouth anthropologists found themselves in front of a discovered time-portal in the Grand Canyon, apparently left there by an alien being and decided to cross through it to see where they'd end up, somewhat bored by the modern world civilization tedium labyrinths of social-media claustrophobia.

AMLAN: My goodness, we're in the time of World War II, brother.

RAKI: Sure; let's just navigate around (since we're here!).

AMLAN: I conjecture we're in this time-zone because of a special 'machinery-lens' of mobilized population(s).

RAKI: I concede that an alien-intelligence would be 'drawn' by world-mobilized machinery reflecting social imagination!

Amlan/Raki had been cognitive anthropology professors in the Ivy-League for about 3 years after graduating from Dartmouth as undergrads and studying anthropology at Yale Grad School and then beginning post-grad Dartmouth studies in the aesthetics of Ancient Egypt as it's imprinted onto cognition-theories about geometric architecture when they stumbled upon this fascinating time-portal in the Grand Canyon in Arkansas (United States).

AMLAN: This era of dark tribulation on Earth is colored by wondrous portraits of mobilized courage!
RAKI: We'll wander around in stealth costumed/pretending to be field-medicine assistants, eh?

AMLAN: The stark truth of World War II is the landscape visualization roughness of a globally-mobilized humanity!

RAKI: The closer you get to Caesar, the worse the fear(s).

AMLAN: The horrific face of World War II was of course the life-losses; what would an alien want us to discover here (extra)?

RAKI: Maybe this alien 'being' wants us to find some undocumented 'secret' about this known dark experience!

That's just what the two Dartmouth cognitive-anthro profs discovered during their alien-intelligence planted time-portal crossing into the WWII (Europe) era/place. They discovered that during this strange time, a wounded Allied soldier placed in the care of a nice Euro-hospital and tended to by a beautiful nurse named Shelbye whom he'd eventually marry, an American named Stanley, encountered a visiting/prowling alien 'being' who'd been wandering around Earth using an invisibility-cloaking 'power' to challenge the hospital-admitted young soldier to a game of chess (perhaps to entreat his medical leave of peaceful/private meditation!).

AMLAN: The soldier's diary indicates some strange reported/cast drawing of the alien's spaceship.

RAKI: I wonder how we'd report this unbelievable revelation back in our own era (Dartmouth)?

The alien is a 'Xenomorph' man-sized insect-dragon being from Martian dimension with incredible intelligence and cunning wit(s) and intended to challenge Allied soldier Stanley (USA) to a medical-leave chess-game to inquire what he believed about the 'quality' of peace-promoting meditation games that, although symbolizing war/strategy nevertheless captured solace/isolation. The smart alien wanted to see if under the stress of warfare, the otherwise affable American soldier Stanley would be intrigued by this notion of chess as peaceful alternative to war-valor. Stanley wrote in his diary, "Maybe Martians are all 'priests' and I'm to keep this all a 'dark' secret!"

According to the further diary-entries of Stanley, which Amlan/Raki poured over while working at this very-same hospital disguised as medical assistants during WWII for their time-travel 'journey' of unforgettable strangeness, the alien ('Endymion' was his name) hoped to draw out Stanley's sense of dual honor/vanity while seeing if the otherwise affable American soldier would be 'drawn' by stalemate-chess condition(s) in a time of warfare-driven arrogance or terror. Turns out, Stanley was able to draw a stalemate-condition with Endymion, since he'd been quite skilled with queen-use, and he wrote in his diary, "Me thinks this alien/Martian simply wants me to brood about the alienation of privacy in a time of great reported social drama/woe."

AMLAN: Let's return to our own time-era after this strange revelation, brother.

RAKI: Stanley drew the alien-visage resembling some caricatures of aliens from modern sci-fi media (Alien); a mystery!

Amlan/Raki opted to keel Stanley's strange/private alien-encounter diary account a complete mystery! They decided that the experience during that era must've reflected some real intentionality regarding the alien's will to cast simply some future-scientific 'study' of the quality of stalemate-oriented peace-chess in times of chess/woe and Stanley's private-meditation(s) regarding the activity of depression.

AMLAN: Maybe this 'Endymion' (alien/Martian!) simply wants us to 'dream' of the contours of publication-complexity!
RAKI: There's a strange 'truth' to wartime-journalism, brother; we must keep this revelation about chess-IQ a secret.

AMLAN: I'll have some of your zesty lime-pie this afternoon at Lou's, darling!

WAITRESS: You look...pensive.

AMLAN: Well, I've just had a sideshow 'academic' experience worthy of eternal secrecy, darling!

WAITRESS: What you need is a nice lime-pie complementing a smooth milkshake (for mental peace).

AMLAN: Cool...there's always 'distance' on Earth, right?

Amlan married that waitress he met at Lou's (diner) at Dartmouth and kept that 'dark-WWII secret' he'd discovered alongside his cognitive anthropology professor/peer (and brother/friend!) Raki. However, he'd confide in his wife what was the most valued secret of that 'lost-generation': the darkness of human/social distance(s).
