Mark is a Homeland 'IQ' sort (and a 'grifter' by heart/wits) with a 'dream' for wrought capitalist wind (for a 'capitalist race' deed).

Mark had always been a 'grifter' at heart. A 'grifter' is a "person who engages in petty or small-scale swindling" as in (sentence), "I saw him as a grifter who preys upon people" (dictionary). Well, Mark was also a patriot at heart, a hopeless advocate/reader of Romanticism, following the works of Dreiser and Wharton and loving modern patriot-comics (e.g., GI-Joe) and (now) cooked-up a special 'view' for infiltration into the domain of a ruthless blood-diamond baron (Ion), hoping to draw in him a social-media exposing gem-insurance commentary 'handshake' complementing his 'proposition' for a co-investment with an 'upstart' horse of a special race-company (Arklow) who he'd been 'certain' would (somehow) become a millionaire-winner in this Homeland of great 'strides' in capitalism race word/image (wow).

MARK: I don't literally, per-se, see myself as a 'grifter' by quality or hand-writing, but I've always been a liberal and Utopian and thinking of the 'character' of Artful Dodger (Dickens) or the left-universe eco-idealism work of Edward Abbey and now formed this Ion-company Arklow horse-race investment 'blueprint' to feel I'd 'connect' with social-media intelligentsia, Ivy-grads (perhaps!), invested in this capitalism-race Homeland 'chess' of worded readings (for the Ego).

BARON-ION: This 'fellow' calls me claiming he'd been immersed in some capitalism 'scholarship' and had been some social-media 'advocate' of great American stories about 'wrought' vigilante-fantasies, and I (honestly now) think he's some kind of 'Artful Dodger' type (perhaps) with some 'real' form for intelligence/chess in my American 'expo' for treasure/securities motions in a 'wickedness' culture (ha).

Mark played his hand well re-presented himself at the horse-track(s) to the Ion-company with a Dodger-with-a-view and offered a social-media handshake for the Ion-company gem-insurance/ad 'showcase' for race-culture (Churchill-Downs). The two cheered the Arklow team, and the 'upstart' horse won his race, and would indeed go onto millionaire-winning 'circle' status, and Mark had told (promised) Baron Ion he'd write a 'great American novel' about the Arklow-team symbolism for treasure/investment hand-fiction for 'weakness' superstition(s).

BARON ION: Do you 'doubt' I'm a capitalist...you 'think' I'm a terrorist?
MARK: You're only my 'partner' (here), bad-baron; I've gem-cufflinks for show!

BARON ION: You gift me those cufflinks in exchange for some of my gems?

MARK: If our (fantasy) Arklow-team wins (ok)!

Well, Baron Ion did consent to offering a post-race commentary in media about gem-insurance for investments complementing other 'sportsman' activity/arenas and declared his associate to be something of a capitalism race 'consulting-wizard' and meanwhile (unwittingly) 'gifted' Mark some of his blood-diamonds in exchange for his gem (fakes) cufflinks, which he'd use (now) for a media-catalyzed 'flight' to Brussels and a (real) Euro-writing exposition presenting a 'tie' between magazine-culture intrigue and a grifters-hand fiction for all that'd become a capitalist's world (for all).
