Building an Electric Legacy: The Career and Vision of Tony FairweatherA Story by Adam BrownBuilding an Electric Legacy: The Career and Vision of Tony Fairweather![]() Tony Fairweather, born in 1971, is
an Australian entrepreneur and mechanical engineer who has devoted his career
to advancing electric vehicle technology and building businesses that support
sustainable transport. He is best known as the founder of SEA Electric, the
company that introduced the SEA Drive power system and developed one of the
first ranges of all electric commercial trucks. His leadership has been central
to the global expansion of SEA Electric and to the transformation of the
electric commercial vehicle industry. Fairweather’s interest in mechanics
was clear from a young age, a passion that led him to Swinburne University of
Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with
Honors in 1994. Driven to combine technical knowledge with business leadership,
he went on to complete a Master of Business in Enterprise Innovation in 1997,
followed by an MBA in International Business in 1999, both at Swinburne. This
mix of engineering and business education gave him the tools to approach
complex problems with both technical precision and strategic insight. He began his professional career at
Coca Cola Amatil where he worked for five years. During this time, he developed
skills in operations and technology efficiency, experiences that encouraged him
to think about innovation in business practices. Afterward he moved into
management consulting while finishing his MBA, strengthening his capacity for
strategy and organizational planning. He then joined TNT Express, now FedEx,
where he managed two businesses across Queensland. His role carried full profit
and loss responsibilities and introduced him to the challenges of parcel
delivery operations, industrial relations, and human resources. These years
exposed him to the logistics sector and expanded his knowledge of large scale
transport operations, insights that would prove valuable when he turned to
entrepreneurship. In 2006 Fairweather co-founded
Patico Automotive with his father. The company focused on niche commercial
vehicle brands in both Australia and New Zealand. Through Patico he gained
deeper experience in the automotive industry and began to see how alternative
energy could play a role in the future of vehicles. His work in distribution
and his engagement with fleet demands convinced him that electric technology
had the potential to reshape transport. This realization prepared him for the
most significant chapter of his career. In 2012 he founded SEA Electric in
Melbourne with the goal of designing and producing electric power systems for
commercial vehicles. For five years he guided the company through planning,
testing, and development, eventually introducing the SEA Drive technology to
the market. In 2017 SEA Electric launched its first all-electric commercial
truck, a milestone that marked the beginning of its rise as a global player.
Under Fairweather’s leadership the company expanded internationally and formed
important partnerships with major original equipment manufacturers including
Mack and Hino Trucks. Industry recognition followed with the Heavy Vehicle
Industry Australia Product Innovation Award in 2021 and Green Car Journal’s
Green Car Product of Excellence award in 2022. The progress of SEA Electric was
measured not only by awards but also by practical results. Its fleet
collectively passed three million miles of operational use, showing the
reliability of its technology. Models such as the SEA 300 EV, SEA 500 EV, and
SEA M5 EV were introduced, each strengthening the company’s reputation as a
leader in sustainable transport. The company also secured contracts in the
United States, reinforcing its position as a strong competitor in the North
American market. A new milestone came on April 5,
2024 when SEA Electric merged with Exro Technologies, a Canadian company listed
on the Toronto Stock Exchange and specializing in electric power solutions.
This strategic move combined resources and created new opportunities for
innovation. Fairweather, who already held eight patents through SEA Electric,
became part of a larger organization with a combined portfolio of about one
hundred patents. Following the merger, he joined the board of directors of Exro
Technologies, extending his influence on the global electric vehicle sector. Fairweather continued to expand his
contributions to the industry beyond SEA Electric. In 2024 he founded the EV
Advisory Group and took on the role of chief executive officer. This venture
reflected his determination to help advance electric vehicle adoption across
the industry. He also continued his service as a non-executive director at
OldView, a position he has held since 2015. His career achievements have been
recognized internationally. In 2025 he was included in Marquis Who’s Who, a
biographical directory that selects individuals based on their accomplishments,
prominence, and influence. This honor reflects his role as a respected leader
in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sustainable transport. Fairweather has also been careful
to maintain a balance between his professional life and personal commitments.
He is married to Sarah and they have two children, Charlotte and William. He
values time spent outdoors and draws inspiration from travel and nature, which
reinforce his belief in environmentally conscious transport. His personal
commitment to sustainability is reflected in the goals he sets for his
companies. He has also been active in community initiatives, showing that his
definition of success extends beyond business achievement. Tony Fairweather’s career is a
story of how engineering knowledge, business skill, and entrepreneurial drive
can come together to build lasting change. Through SEA Electric he introduced
innovative solutions that reshaped the commercial vehicle industry. Through the
merger with Exro Technologies he helped create a stronger platform for future
growth. Through the EV Advisory Group he extended his reach to influence the
industry more widely. His path from a young engineer with an interest in mechanics
to an international business leader demonstrates persistence, creativity, and
vision. Today his work stands as an example of how determination and innovation
can create not only successful companies but also a cleaner and more
sustainable future for global transport. © 2026 Adam Brown |
