From Adversity to Anthem: The Rise of Southern Outlaws BandA Story by Adam BrownFrom Adversity to Anthem: The Rise of Southern Outlaws Band![]() Southern Outlaws Band stands as a
modern example of how personal hardship can be transformed into meaningful
music. Based in Northeast Ohio, the American country and Southern rock group
has built its identity around honest storytelling, traditional influences, and
a sound shaped by lived experience. Formed in 2019, the band blends outlaw
country themes with Southern rock instrumentation, drawing inspiration from
artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and The Marshall Tucker Band
while remaining grounded in its own regional roots. At the center of the band is
founder Arlis Walker, a musician and songwriter whose journey into music began
long before Southern Outlaws Band officially came together. Raised in a musical
family, Walker was exposed to bluegrass and country music early, which shaped
his ear for melody and narrative songwriting. As a teenager, he performed in
bands and developed a strong connection to live performance. His talent eventually
led him to the Grand Ole Opry, where he performed in 1994, marking a
significant milestone in his early musical life. Despite this momentum, Walker
stepped away from music to pursue a career in law enforcement. He served as a
police officer in Newton Falls, Ohio, and later worked as a deputy with the
Stark County Sheriff’s Department. This period of his life was defined by
service, discipline, and community responsibility. However, in 1999, an on-duty
accident brought his law enforcement career to an abrupt end. The incident
resulted in severe injuries, extensive medical treatment, and several years of
wheelchair use, forcing Walker to confront a future very different from the one
he had planned. Recovery was long and physically
demanding, but music slowly reentered Walker’s life as a form of rehabilitation
and emotional support. Writing songs and reconnecting with instruments provided
a sense of direction during a difficult period. Music became both a creative
release and a reminder that personal identity does not disappear after
hardship. Over time, Walker returned to performing, carrying with him a deeper
perspective shaped by resilience and recovery. The Southern Outlaws Band
officially formed in 2019, during an unprecedented period of disruption in the
global music industry. While the band's early stages coincided with the COVID
era, the group used that time to focus on songwriting and collaboration rather
than rushing into the spotlight. The name Southern Outlaws Band reflects a
merging of musical tradition and personal history, honoring Southern influences
while referencing Walker’s background in law enforcement and the spirit of
independence that defines outlaw country. The band’s music is rooted in
Southern rock guitar tones, steady rhythms, and lyrics that emphasize
storytelling over trend-driven production. Many songs draw directly from real
experiences, touching on themes such as perseverance, loyalty, community, and
the healing power of music. Rather than relying on spectacle, Southern Outlaws
Band focuses on substance, allowing listeners to connect with songs that feel
personal and sincere. One of the group’s most notable
tracks, Good for the Soul, captures this philosophy clearly. The song explores
how music and friendship can help people endure difficult chapters of life. In
2021, the track earned a World Songwriting Award for Best Outlaw Song, bringing
wider recognition to the band’s work. Additional independent music
organizations have also acknowledged the group’s songwriting and musicianship
through various nominations and honors. In 2022, Southern Outlaws Band
released its debut album, The Southern Outlaws. The album presents a cohesive
collection of Southern rock and country-influenced songs that reflect the
band’s identity and regional pride. It was named a Country Album of the Year
finalist by the Rampage Music Awards, helping the group reach listeners beyond
Ohio. The record includes original tracks such as Southbound Train, Four Walls
of Raiford, Louisiana Water, Liberty, Bullet for Freedom, and Outlaws and
Bikers, along with select covers that honor classic material. Live performance has played a key
role in the band’s continued growth. Southern Outlaws Band regularly performs
across Ohio and the Midwest, appearing at regional venues and industry-related
events. The group has also performed as part of a preshow for the Independent
Singer Songwriter Association Awards in Atlanta. In Newton Falls, Ohio, the
band enjoys strong hometown support and frequently returns to perform for local
audiences who have closely followed their journey. The current lineup reflects a wide
range of musical backgrounds. Arlis Walker serves as lead vocalist, harmonica
player, songwriter, producer, and frontman. Lead guitarist Dave Weilacher II
contributes vocals, songwriting, and production, bringing energy shaped by a
lifetime of performing since childhood. Bass guitarist Matt Bower adds vocals
and songwriting, drawing on experience across genres including rock, country,
soul, metal, and classical. Drummer MykoMan Lawrence rounds out the group with
vocals and songwriting, drawing influence from classic rock, Motown, jazz,
country, and pop traditions. Past and touring members have included Bob Furda,
Mike Bright Jr., Tom Levak, and William Putt. Southern Outlaws Band has received
multiple independent music awards and nominations, including two Grammy Award
nominations and two World Entertainment Awards nominations. These achievements
reflect both the strength of the music and the story behind it. The band’s rise
continues to resonate with listeners who value authenticity, perseverance, and
music shaped by real-life experience. © 2026 Adam Brown |
