Silly Billy

A poem about a guy in search of a girl. This is for a contest whereby only words with no more than five letters may be used.

Silly Billy

 

Silly Billy rode to town

on his tiny pony

for a girl whom he may crown

as his one and only.

 

Round and round and up and down,

every girl was phony.

When they saw him they would frown,

none would be his crony

 

till he met this funny clown

who was thin and bony.

She had a charm that could drown

his world that was stony.

This is very well done. The line that made me laugh out loud was 'every girl was phony'. I think this is a good example of a poem where the self imposed restrictions (including the number of letters per word) really add to the overall effectiveness.

Thanks for your review, John! Where there’re restrictions, “necessity is the mother of invention“. Nothing evolves without restrictions to adapt to, or a star to guide it. Although adaptation is painful, it’s necessary for innovation. Life’s always engaged in the quest for survival, and that’s its restrictive mantra enabling it to evolve. A restrictive poem evolves into its most adaptive form.
