Professor Kilbor's AdviceA Story by Albert FreemanThis is a tale about advice, an elopement and jealousy. The story is about a college professor. It starts in a large city in Australia. The story begins with an elopement and ends with someone reading a book.Professor Kilbor's Advice
Professor Roger Kilbor polished his glasses for the third time in exasperation. He placed them back on and stared at his two star students once again. He was truly at a loss for words. They had turned his advice upside down and seemed to be looking at him for approval at what they had done. "Run this by me again," he said. He moved to sit down in his chair and moved aside the papers he had been grading. "You eloped?" "Yes we did, Professor Kilbor," James Lonigan said with a grin and he looked from the professor to his new wife. "You said the jealousy we had towards one another was not constructive to a good environment and for us to channel it in a positive way." "So we did," the new Mrs. Hannah Lonigan said with a delighted laugh. Professor Kilbor could feel a headache coming on and rubbed his temples. He could just imagine how this would play out before the board. He had only recently arrived in Perth at this teaching post the previous month and he could already feel the heat increasing under his feet. "James..Hannah...when I said you'd do well to channel this energy I didn't mean into eloping and heaven knows what else. Have you even told your parents of this?" "Well...no," James said avoiding the professors eyes. "We wanted you to be the first to know," Hannah said, slipping her hand nervously into James' hand. James gave her a reassuring look. "We thought it best to inform you first, professor. We're kind of hoping you help us break it to our parents." Professor Kilbor turned his thoughts to the bottle of 151 in the desk in his office. It was a gift that he had never opened, but now he had a feeling he'd soon be drinking plenty from it. He wanted to finish reading the book he had bought the other day as well, but now these two bunglers had given him a real problem. "Give me tonight and I'll be able to help you both," he said, forcing a smile upon his face. He stood up and ushered them to the door. "Many congratulations on the elopement and it will surely cure your jealousy problem." He held back a snort and wondered how much a good divorce lawyer would cost the kids. "No, no. No need to thank me," he said leading them into the hall. "Go to your dorms, apartment, whatever and share in the joy." He saw them off and went back in the classroom closing the door and turning the lock. He sat back at his desk and made a mental note to update his resume. Since when did kids take harmless advice to such an extreme? He looked at the papers and sighed. He'd throw them in his case and lug them over to his office. He was determined to have that drink and finish his book. Maybe while doing it he'd come up with something to save his bacon and his star students. © 2008 Albert FreemanAuthor's Note
