We All Know Him

We All Know Him

A Poem by Alice Mayes

We all know him
We all know his name
We all feel the same emotions
We all know that same rage and hate

We try to stand up for ourselves,
Yet we're somehow in the wrong.
Because we "have no friends"?
"No praise"?

Why do you hate us?

If you truly wish for respect,
you're only going to get it by respecting others,
 even ones younger than you.
Just because you are older
may not mean you are wiser.

You compare us to people we've never known
Compare us to attempts long gone
Compare our efforts to something only you may know.

We didn't ask how many states and countries you've visited.
We don't care how many official published works you have.
WE DON'T CARE HOW MANY PEOPLE LOVE YOU.

We fight back because we are not you.
We fight back because we were not raised like you.
We fight back because we are different.
We fight back because we have emotions, something you don't seem to grasp.

You want to tell me how special your kids are?
How many "pages worth" of praise and admiration you get?
How many friends you have (and have the audacity to compare that to someone who's been here for only a few weeks?)?

If you bother to read this,
No, sorry,

If you can spare a measly minute from your so hard, so busy, so praise-filled life to read and "review" this, I hope you know that we are all sick and tired of your bullshit.

Good luck not dying,
            Alice M. Reiht

I like this it has a rebellious nature. I celebrate anyone who is not afraid to be themselves and can accept other for doing the same. Some people act like you need there permission to exist, I reject this and this poem sounds like it does too. We all don't need to see eye to eye, but looking down on someone else is a weakness of the mind. I enjoyed the read.

He is arrogant and obnoxious
Full of himself and his achievements
Glad you put him to size

First of all, this is extremely powerful.
Secondly, I admire you for being brave and having the courage to stand up for people.
To tell you the truth, there really is more than one, but what makes me feel relieved is that there are many really good people, but I guess we just don't have as many effective words as them.

Glad to have you Alice.

There's been more than one.. there have been and always will be. Takes a courageous being to stay quiet, it's the windbag who blows his credit into the gutter! Great warning to duck each time someone says too much > go read Alice's great shout!!! In the meantime, no idea who you're talking about.. but think I get the your point!

At first I thought this was a poem about living under the gaze of a mean-spirited, narcissistic god. However, as the poem continued I started to realise that it is actually about someone small with a god complex. I hope I never have the displeasure. I did find pleasure in your vitriolic statements for what it is worth, dear poet.
