Dragon's Defense

Dragon's Defense

A Poem by Alicia-Veracity

I could breathe fire

Bask in the chaos

Destroy all before me

For the crown I have wrought

I could live King

Never caring for the broken

Destruction at my wings

This loneliness unspoken

I could pretend

That wealth grants me joy

Hoard all for myself

A truly tragic ploy

To beckon another

To come strike me down

My one hope in life

That one would cut through the sound

That emanates from deep

Beneath these tainted scales

Where a tender heart still beats

Begging to be unveiled

I could be this

I could pretend

That I am so strong

A fierce and mighty dragon

But it would never matter

For deep within my soul

The loneliness would ring out

Despite all I withhold

Then one would slay me

And take hold my hollow treasure

But I’d be the one happiest

For by execution is greater pleasure

For there is no joy in wealth

No satisfaction in its cold glint

I’d take love over every coin

And for company, in excess spend

So I will shed these scales

Walk from the cave with nothing

Except the hope to know another

Tender flesh to taste what love is
