Known

Known

A Poem by E.J. Waling

Known.
What is
known?
How much
to know?
How much
can be
known?
Knowledge.
Information.
How much
to be
had?
Capacity
to know.
Storage,
processing
power.
Levels
of intelligence.
How many
rungs?
Bird.
Cat.
Dog.
Human.
Each limited.
Limited
unto
itself.
No more,
finite.
Boxed in.
Limited
scope,
compartmentalize.
Higher the
climb
greater the
library.
How many
rungs?
How
high the
ladder be?

I like the question this poem poses. How much knowledge indeed are we able to attain and process in our limited capacity. Does too much fracture our psyche? Does only pertinent information find purchase while useless is cast away from memory. If we were to evolve mentally from such raw data and knowledge would we become godlike? Would we know everything in this universe that we would disregard our mortal shell and simply exist as pure thoughtful energy? What aspects of our humanity would we be lost in such a transformation into godhood?
