They Come

They Come

A Poem by E.J. Waling

They come.
Generation
after
generation.
Never ending
flow.
Out of
the mist
materialize.
Ethereal
passage.
Entering
the realm.
Marching
armies new
to the
field.
Replacements,
assuming
control.
Taking the
baton.
Priors
fading.
Fading
away.
Exhausted.
End of
story.
Gone!
Time
in theater
short.
Battling.
As those
before.
New troops
engage.
New hopes.
Battling.
Time,
slipping
away.
Immemorial!
Passing
them by.
Next wave
arrives.
