Fear in debtA Poem by AnataAt night they come alive Our fears and horrors revive Under the dark sky There is no way to defy Against them we shall battle As in the cold our teeth rattle Stick and stones will break no bones Hardly produce teeth grinding tones As the nightmare comes to life Strangling fingers round the knife Shadows we cannot eliminate Eye in eye we shall stand with faith Visions of gore and blood Changing appearance in the mud Rain washes away our scars Under the dimmed light of the stars Day shall set soon Sunlight deafens the howling moon Our memories flow down the sink What we fear disappears in a blink Until black clouds aloud the night All over again starts the fight The horror story told to kids Brings alive whatever the adult forbids Growing up slowly understanding What we fear steadily expanding The most true horror we will see When night set our soul free Our fear we create our own As our memories we postpone And slowly come to accept A lifetime spent to pay the debt
