What Sets You Apart

What Sets You Apart

A Story by Annam M Gordon

There are times when being different feels like a punishment. Like you are standing on the outside of the glass, watching everyone else belong. It costs you friendships, comfort, and sometimes even the simple ease of feeling at home in your own skin. But there are also moments when that same strangeness turns into a light. It lets you notice what others pass by, gives you words for things people don’t know how to say, and opens doors to deeper understanding. The wisdom it gives you is compassion for yourself, and for anyone else who feels out of place. The toll is the ache of loneliness, the tiredness of always carrying that difference. But you don’t trade it, because it’s part of what makes you see the world the way you do.

Anyone trying to survive being different has my greatest empathy. Better loneliness than being mindless sheep in a herd. I really relate to this.
