It’s dark, darker than it has been for days, you can hear the steady tapping of rain - you sigh, thinking about life before all this happened, when there was sunshine and smiles, before they came and took your brother.  You search the room, looking to see something, anything; you catch movement in the far corner and carefully slide off the hard surface you are on, finding the wall and sliding along until the deafening sound of thunder froze you in place, and causing a small whimper to sound in the corner.  You don’t dare move, afraid, but afraid of what?  You don’t even know where you are, you think, trying to remember where you could be.  A screeching scream shook you out of your thoughts, you open your eyes, and in seconds the small dark room was lit up and there was a roar of thunder from all around you.  You sink to the floor, close your eyes tight and start counting out loud and soon a little voice started with you.  The thunder continued with the sharp flashes of lightning every couple of seconds, you continue counting trying to calm yourself down.  You shut your eyes and count, with every number the thunder gets louder and the lightning gets more intense, you squeeze your eyes as tight as you can, you’re calming down.  The little voice seems to be getting closer but you don’t dare open your eyes in fear, then that question comes to you again – fear of what? Afraid of what? Where am I?  A sudden jolt of electricity is sent through your body; it’s calming yet frightening.  You stop counting and open your eyes – you take a deep breath, and you can’t hear anything anymore, the lightning is no longer frightening to you, all you see is a girl of maybe 6 staring at you with big beautiful blue eyes, you look down at your tingling hands and see she is holding yours with a tight grip.  You look back into her eyes and she smiles, you smile back; not even aware of what’s going on around you.  A thought crosses your mind –who is she?  You squeeze the girls hands and feel more electricity go into your body taking your breath away, you look her in the eyes and start to speak when she cuts you off “Julie” she said in a small voice, “what?” you say in a confused tone- she looked sad all of a sudden,

“You wanted to know what my name was, right?”

“Uhh well yeah, but I never asked.”

“Oh...” She looked down awkwardly and took a deep breath, releasing her hands out of yours –the tingling stopped.

“Wow, what...what did...is...what was that?” you say staring at your hands in amazement.

“S-s-sorry.” Julie said with a shaky voice while backing away.

You try to take her hand again, but she moves away faster.  She worked her way back to the corner before the shaking of the windows and the lightning becomes clear again.  You shake your head, trying to figure out what just happened – you look down at your hands, still feeling where her hands were.  Hours passed, no one spoke, finally out of exhaustion you fall into a deep restless sleep.

                A sharp pain in your stomach wakes you, hunger-how long as it been since you’ve eaten? You think to yourself as you slowly open your eyes.  You jump, not expecting to see Julie, but there she was curled up in a tight ball at your side.  She opened her eyes slowly and looked at you for a long moment before she finally spoke.

“Suns up, I think” she said quietly.

“Oh”

“Yeah...”

You stand up slowly, trying to ignore the pain in your stomach.  You make your way over to the small window in the far end of the room.  She was right; the sun was shining high in the sky.  You pull at the window trying to open it, it’s stuck, but you don’t give up, you pull and pull until it opens up wide.  A gust of wind enters the room; it smells so fresh, much better than the musty smell you have smelt for the past several hours.  You work your way back to the far end of the room where Julie still lay, you sit against the wall and listen, you hear bird chirping, and the wind blowing the trees, and it’s a beautiful .

The sound of coughing wakes you, it’s Julie, she’s lying on her side; taking deep shallow breaths; coughing in between each breath.  You’re shocked, frozen in place, afraid to do anything.  A couple of minutes go by and her breathing is back to normal.  You stand and run to her as fast as you can, throw yourself onto the floor beside her and take her hand; the tingling is back, it takes your breath away.  She pulls her hands away roughly and slides away.

“You’re not allowed to do that,” she said in a quiet but firm voice.

“W-w-what did, was, how, what was that?”  You ask in awe; looking down at your hands.

“It’s nothing,” She says fast.

“Nothing?” You look at her suspiciously.

“Yeah,” she says quietly.

“Well if it’s nothing, why can’t you tell me?”

“’cause, I jus’ can’t tell you,”

“What if I tell you somethin’, kinda like a secret fer a secret, wanna do that?”

“Umm..Okay, you first,” she said excitedly.

“‘Kay, my secret is that when I was ‘lil I used to climb tree’s and pretend I could fly.” You blush a little and wait for Julie to burst into uncontrolled laughter, but she didn’t, she nodded her head and smiled thoughtfully.

“Did you ever?” she asked quietly.

“Did I ever what?” you ask confused.

“Fly,”

“Oh, uh I think I did once, but it could just be my imagination, “

“’kay, just thought you might be one of us too”

“One of you?”

She didn’t say anything; just looked down at her hands.

“Julie, what do you mean; one of you?”

She looked angry all of a sudden.

“A freak,” she said through clenched teeth.

“Julie, I don’t understand, you’re not a freak.”

“Yes I am, I can prove it.” With that she stood up, turned around and pulled her baggy sweater up over her head.

“Julie is this really-“you stop mid sentence, what you see is the most frightening yet beautiful thing you’ve ever seen;  she has beautiful ivory tattoos all down her back all connected to these velvet black wings.

“Told you,” she said on the verge of tears.

“Oh-my-gosh, Julie...that’s...beautiful.”

She turned around slowly, pulling the sweater back over her head.

“Beautiful?” She asked wearily.

You nod.  She nods back, sits down and starts playing with a loose stone.

“So....Do you know where we are?”  You ask her.

She nods again.  You smile. At least you were making progress with her.

“Can you tell me?”

“Dunno exactly where we are...all I know is we are in a big building wif a lot of other people like me,”

“Then why am I here?” You ask, with a confused look.

“Dunno...that’s why I thought you were one of use,” She said gesturing towards her back.

“Well last time I checked I didn’t have wings and tattoos all over my back, so I’m guessing they made a mistake taking me and my brother.”

“They?”  She asks

“Yeah, they, I don’t know who they are. “

She nods her head and starts to yawn, her eyes drooping.

“How long have you been here, Julie?”

“’bout a week, they took me and my friend.”

“Where’s your friend?”

“Dunno, they took her through the door the day before you came here.” She said in a tired voice.

“Oh, well has anyone else been here, you know to give you food or water or something?”

”No.”

What no food, no water? Where did Julie’s friend go, what do they do with them?  Why am I here?  You ask yourself several questions you can’t answer for an extended amount of time, when you finally realize you can’t answer any you decide to ask Julie some.

“Jul-“ You start to speak but when you look up Julie is already fast asleep.  What time is it? They took your watch and there’s no clock in the room so you have no way of telling unless you wait until the sun comes back up.

                You wake up with a strange feeling, the feeling that someone is watching you.  You slowly open your eyes and see a man, maybe three times your size staring down at you with something white in his one hand, a cloth maybe, but by the time you wake up enough to realize what’s happening, the man pushes down one your mouth with the cloth, you try to take a breathe but you choke on the smell.  You become tired, it’s getting harder and harder to keep your eyes open, finally you give in and let the blackness seep in.

                This has to be a dream you think to yourself.  There’s no way this can be real.  You’re looking in the face of your brother-but this can’t be my brother you think to yourself, he’s not like this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(Continued)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You wake, your head is pounding, and your is body aching everywhere, perfect you think to yourself in a sarcastic tone,
“This is just what I need on top of my to do list." You mutter as you start to open your eyes.  "JEZZE!" You yell as soon as you start to open them, there's a light shinning down on you, making everything around you look scary white, whiter than snow, whiter than anything you've seen before.  You close your eyes, trying to calm yourself down, you were afraid again, afraid for your brother, afraid for Julie and afraid for yourself.  You open your eyes slowly, letting them adjust to the light; once you open them all the way you look around the room, everything is white, like a hospital room, but the only difference was that you were strapped down to the bed.
You fall against the pillow hard; you had to think, how am I supposed to get out of this mess? You think as you look around the room again.  “This is stupid…why am I here? I’m not like Julie, I have no wings, or cool looking tattoos…I Thi-“A cough interrupts your mumbling.  You look over and realize that there’s three little girls standing beside your bed.
“Hi,” says the girl in the middle of the group of three, “I am Kiana, this is Lea” she says gesturing to the tallest out of the three, “and this is Kristin” she said pointing to the shortest girl in purple “and you are?” You start to speak but she cuts you off, “Actually, we do not need that information; you will not be around that long anyway, even if the experiment does work.”
You widen your eyes in surprise, “experiment?”
Kristin grinned “Yeah, gunna be great, lots of fun, we try make you into flying bird wif pretty pictures on your tummy an back!!”
“Yeah, Lea added “If this works, you’ll be like us, and get to help Alec!”
“Get out and get to class, both of you! What did I tell you about talking?” Kiana screamed.
“’Kay, sorry.” They both said together.
As they walked out Kiana stared after them grimacing, once they were out of the room she turned on you, “Do not think about making friends with my younger sisters, they will not help you, so don’t try.” She started out; just as she reached the door she turned around, “Good night.” She said giving you a evil smirk and shutting of the lights.
This kind of reminds me of Maximum Ride by James Patterson. If you describe the scenery a little more that would help too. I think development of the characters . When the brother came into the story I just was thrown off. You should talk about the childhood of the main character and the brother. What was their relationship like? Little things like that can help develop your story and make the readers want to read more. Hopefully I helped a little :)
