My Introduction Letter

A Poet in Bloom: An introduction to the writing of Ashley Nicole Nordyke

I first discovered my love for words, when I was ten years old. It started out as a creative

writing assignment in my fourth grade class. While the other kids were moaning and groaning about coming up with a story, I was thrilled. The words poured out on the page quite easily, flowing as I saw the story in my head. My teacher was astonished by my ability to use very descriptive words. She even had me read it out loud to the class.

I slowly began to write little stories and such on my own. Not really thinking anything of them and tossing them in the trash. As my adolescence turned into teenagehood, my experience in school became worse. I became the subject of many bullying sessions. I found that I started to write out how I felt. These writings became little poems. Still, I just tossed them out.

At the beginning of adulthood, I went through a personal traumatic situation. I found my self once again, falling upon my love of words to get me through the day. However, I found myself enjoying it even more and keeping each piece to remind myself, that I can get through it. I've come to love writing so much, I have decided it's what I want to do for the rest of my life. Poetry has become to mean so much to me. A way to express how you feel to anyone willing to listen. Sometimes I find myself being able to express easier through a poem, than actually saying it to a person.

Having a mental health disorder, has also become an important part of my writing. I tend to write pieces that show the dark sides of our minds, and then turn around and write a piece that gives you hope.

I would like to win this fellowship in order to continue my education. I will be attending college to receive a Bachelors of Arts, Majoring in English.

This is a good piece Ashley, concise and straight to the point. No beating around the bush. I am sure they will accept you in with a letter this good, maybe I could add I a few pointers, if you don't mind?
Perhaps some paragraphing may tidy up your well-penned sentences :)
