A Poet's Prayer

I went through a period where I was writing more about my faith in God and my walk with God. I used to write my prayers in the form of poetry. This one is from 2003.

Father open me the door

Show me the plan you set me for

Thank you Lord for putting me first

And it’s because of your blood that I continue to thirst

Father open up the eyes

So that the world will see

In hopes that someday we’ll all rejoice

And together we will be.

My dad never spoke English. He just couldn't get down to learning it. But he was able to understand a lot of it. I still read my stuff to him, and no matter what he always enjoyed it. He could figure out where the rhymes were and all that stuff.

in any case, you did a good job of capturing spiritual metric in your poetic form

Yeah this was a long time ago. I was raised in church, still believe and attend when I can. I writing life went through phases. I went through writing about living through my parents divorce and how that affected me, how I felt like I was being ripped apart and all that. Then went on to finding hope in God and spent some years just getting my religious thoughts out. I still, on occasion write religious poetry, but my main focus has been writing about other things that I see from a different perspective. Of course I have gone back to writing out my emotions since my dad died recently. Writing poetry is the way I deal with going through dark and sad times. But by and large, I have been pushing myself to write about other things as well.

i've written alot of spiritual things
like you i've explored alot of different literary paths though

You know, I've learned over time to not be afraid to write what I think. And if I find it that I can share it with people, then I do.

i think the best writer's arent afraid to share thier opinions
because if you hold back, youll always be limiting your literary voice

True. And you'd be allowing others to define you as a person and writer too.
