I Want One Like My Daddy

I Want One Like My Daddy

A Poem by ashleydawn

Nervously I sat
Tapping my heel on the tile
Glancing at my watch
Irritation set in
This meeting was important to me
Life-changing
Where was my cosultant?
As I gathered my purse
Reluctantly accepting the fact
that she had forgotten
She whisked through the door
in a flurry
Stuttering excuses
and gasping for air in her rush
I smoothed my skirt
and told her it was fine
We could now get started
She pulled out her clipboard
and asked me the same questions
as the one before her
My address, name and number
Occupation, age, degree
She scribble quickly to keep up
with me responses
This part was easy
Now came the point
where things were a little more difficult:
What qualifications were necessary
for my mate?
In my first round of this
I did not know how to answer this one
but now my response
is scripted:
"I'd like him sweet and strong.
Big enough to protect me
and small enough to run
into sunsets and streams.
He needs to be creative,
exploratative, and curious.
Examining the world around him
and producing work that intrigues.
A decent flair in the kitchen
and the sense to add things in.
The chivalry to cut my meat
and clean the roof.
Opening cans and doors
A serving heart
with a will for helpful jobs,
using expertise to lend a hand
to old and young alike.
A soft worn spot
for a painting brush
to fit inside a calloused guitar playing hand.
A rich deep voice that can sing from the soul
and the belly laugh to fake amusement
at my jokes.
A soft, changing voice
that will imitate the story book characters
at bedtime for our kids.
Monster hands that will send them
into fits of laughter.
Stern character to discipline
and guide in love
A father that builds
a man out of a son
and a woman from a girl.
Who can fish and tackle
and braid blonde hair.
Who can pick me up
and carry me to bed
when the day has called me
to crash on the couch.
Sweetly kissing my forehead
and tidying the house.
A man that is not afraid of mistakes
of embaressment for fun.
Who will embark on every adventure
and stretch our every dollar.
Last but the most important feature
of all,
He needs to have a heart for God,
a passion to follow Him.
A dedication to read His words
and to guide me in faith.
A strong prayer when I'm broken
and hands to lift me in praise.
Living out his life for Him.
I want one
like my Daddy.
Can you make another?"
  "Well, let's see.. "
