Across the Sea
As autumn fades upon the borderline
And northern winds bring news of heavy times,
I stand among the restless, supple pines
Protecting summer's wisps and fragile rhymes.
The sea of faith once breathed a steady roar
Of gravel which the waves had gently hurled;
But now few sounds are heard from those calm shores,
Except the naked shingles of the world.
Yet wait, my dear, your love shall I pursue
Across the lonesome ocean’s barren ground;
A steady ship I’ll steer with purpose true:
That your unspoiled lips shall soon be found.
So courage bear the sinews of your might,
For love has dimmed those songs of misery!
Come evening I shall take into the night,
And sail beyond the phosphorescent sea.
My love, my love, I'll be sailing afar,
Beneath the hues of heaven's quiet stars.
