The Weight of a Heart

An Egyptian man awaits the judgment of his life.

He found himself in a dim chamber, knowing his body was being prepared. The single torch illuminated Osiris in his throne; nearby sat Thoth, with the tools of a scribe. In front stood a large scale: one pan held justice, the feather of Ma'at; waiting under the other was the creature Ammit, ready to gobble the heavy heart. His heart was placed on the scale. It's weight would decide his fate; would he be welcomed into the Fields of Hetep and Iaru, or be devoured? After teetering for a nerve-racking moment, they balanced. He had passed the judgment.

Egyptian mythology is not my strongest suit, but the story is very well constructed. The suspense slowly builds up until the final sentence where the reader can finally breathe with relief - his hero has passed the judgement. We also have the element of horror - the terrifying creature that is ready to gobble up the heart in case he doesn´t pass the test righteousness. All in all, you did a great job with this story. It makes me one catch up on my reading about Egyptian mythology. :))
