Calpurnia's Dream

Calpurnia's Dream

A Poem by Ayanami
"

So... I wrote this for my English class last year. Meh, and I decided to post it on here :D It's based on Calpurnia's Dream in Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar.

"

Calpurnia’s Dream

It’s dark, pitch black.

Where am I, in a dream?

I can’t hear.

I can’t see.

I’m left with nothing but my empty thoughts.

I feel lost, vulnerable, even scared.

It was enveloping me, the darkness, as if embracing me; welcoming me.

Is this how people, devoid of their vision felt, unable to do anything but succumb to the unpleasant darkness?

Whir.

What was that sound? Where was it coming from, over there?

Yes there, I see a slight trace of light; a split in the impenetrable darkness - a silver lining.

The little light blinds me and I squint from the sudden brightness.

I close my eyes.

I’m being drawn in; like opposite poles on a magnet, I’m north and the light is south.

Slowly and carefully, I’m being pulled forward to meet the light.

I stretch out my arms in return.

A cold breath of air slides through my body.

I shiver in response.

The strange, unknown force lessens its hold on me.

And suddenly, I’m falling.

Down.

Down.

Down.

Or is it up?

I don’t know anymore.

Whisper, whisper…

Voices, where?

I feel a hard thud below me and I realize I’ve hit the ground.

The pain is unbearable. I won’t be able to stand up.

I lay there for a while, twitching in pain. I’m expecting some broken bones.

But no, when I run my shaking hands through my body, I find nothing.

Not a scratch.

But the pain, how?

I feel a warm liquid covering my hands. I examine them with my restored vision.

What is this, blood?

The crimson liquid was oozing out of my skin, but there was no sign of a cut.

Whisper, whisper…

Voices, again?

I lift up my head, afraid of what I might find.

A shock runs through my body.

Caesar.

My eyes overflow with tears; they stain my cheeks.

The macabre scene before me breaks my heart.

I couldn’t bring myself to look away.

I shout Caesar’s name, but my voice doesn’t reach him.

Desperately, I want to run to him.

But the pain held me where I was, not allowing me to move even a foot.

All I could do was watch.

Watch the hundreds of Romans’ bathing their hands in the blood coming from Caesar’s lifeless body.

Each time they bathed their hands felt like a sword being stabbed through my heart.

And they were laughing, those beasts!

His blood, it was everywhere.

It wasn’t long before I too was surrounded in his crimson blood.

With tears running down my cheeks, I shout until my voice echoes in everyone’s ears.

I dare to move my body, while screaming in pain.

But no one turns to face me.

No one gives me a glimpse.

No one acknowledges my presence.

I shout one last time before my vision starts to black out.

My eyes are closing.

I’m feeling drowsy.

I can hear my hollow heart beating in my throat.

Have I lost too much blood?

I laugh, despite myself.

My vision goes black and I’m left alone in the darkness once again.
