According to many, life is survival of the fittest. That's why most people want power and fame...for they want to feel that they are the fittest...the winners.

This made me think of King (Bachman's) story: The Long Walk
Where the large group of teenage boys are forced to walk, without stopping for any reason, until only one remains still alive and Wins.
