Ability Falls to Will

Ability Falls to Will

A Poem by Brad Dehler
"

Pg 35; Cantus (book)

"

Ability falls to will

It matters not of the examination

            But of the heart-

            Examine it

I care

            But can’t obsess

I do

            But don’t excess

Got a little piece of Heaven

            But can’t explain

Well, explaining everything would quickly kill any sense of wonder... And that's not good.... Unless you're unable to feel any emotion... Then it doesn't matter.

Sometimes, it seems the 'heart' knows better than an overthinking brain does...

Simplifying stuff is better.. Explaining is coming to the 'appropriate' labels for everything then unveiling the system by which they interact....... I forgot wherever this was going... All in all, an enjoyable read this one... All that coming from someone who's a dud when it comes to poetry. Ha!

As for the beginning... Yeah, ability and opportunity mean nothing if you're not willing to use them for whatever reason...

There's still more packed in ere, and that's why I like it.

By connecting certain ideas and experiences with a little word play, there's a lot of thoughts that will follow in a reader's mind....just keeps branching off further and further..

Gshhh... Sorry for the essay haha

I love how this piece centers intention over ability. The balance between caring, doing, and not overdoing feels quietly wise, and that final "piece of Heaven" adds a beautiful touch of mystery.

I like how you left it in flux mid turn leaving the reader in question mode. How you kept it to yourself on the last line. Pointing out that capability can be subverted with determination while directing us to look in the heart. But that’s my interpretation thanks for posting it.

It is how it comes to me
how one does not obsess or go to excess is still beyond my current learnings - I fall face first into everything I do .... pick up the pieces later :)

Thank you Mr Phillips. Precisely! I really appreciate you recognizing that.
Sure you CAN - explain ...but, you don't need to... at all.

Hmmm yes indeed
Well, it’s always 90% grit and 10% luck. Ability be damned.

Honestly stopped really trying to explain it. It is more like having a conversation about the weather. You can talk it to death but it’s going to be what it is going to be.

Loved the poem.

Scott.
