Your Own Feline

Your Own Feline

A Poem by Brad Dehler
"

This is from my 6th book LAUREATE.

"

Cannot put cat

Back in the bag

But the paw prints evaporate

Winds push the bag

And unkeen hands dispose

Unclean minds depose

Yes, they get away

But your own feline

Indelibly marks your mind

Yes indeed. Just in the same way we cant unsay thoughts spoken or take back actions that should have been thought out better but our impulses were on vacation from brain activity and we are all stuck, waiting for the earth to swallow us whole, which ironically never happens.
We are therefore we do...all the things we shouldn't and all the things we say that should have remained in our minds, away from everyone to judge us guilty, and usually quite rightly so. Will we ever learn? Probably not, but great piece of writing to ponder and only forget a nanosecond after the next time I open my mouth! 😆

This feels like an expansion of the idea that “you can’t go back” which can be applied in different ways but here makes me think of those experiences we’d like to be able to reverse but have no power to do so. I like the way that you explore the idea that things can’t be undone but the impact will evolve and the hardness we feel can lessen with time. That was my understanding, at least. I like the extended metaphor of the cat and the play on the idiom. Enjoyed reading your poem!
