The Patience of LoveA Chapter by Bennet Aloysious TaylorThe rain mirrored the storm brewing inside Ethan. He nervously adjusted his grip on the worn leather of his backpack, the words tumbling over each other in his mind. Across the cafe table, Gladys smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Ethan, you don't have to… I mean, we're friends, right?" He took a deep breath, the scent of freshly brewed coffee doing little to calm his racing heart. "Gladys, I… I think I'm falling for you. More than just friends." The smile faltered. "Ethan…" He braced himself for the inevitable rejection. But Gladys's voice was soft, thoughtful. "Ethan… I really don't know… I value you of course… but I just need some time to think about this, to know about you more. You opened up about your feelings to me and that made me feel like I'm something good of a person… I'm grateful and I respect each and every word you said to me." Hope, fragile and tentative, flickered within him. It wasn't a 'no', but it wasn't a 'yes' either. He nodded, a lump forming in his throat. "Of course. I understand." The months that followed were a torturous limbo. Ethan saw Gladys regularly, their easy friendship intact, yet tinged with an unspoken tension. He poured himself into his studies, his work, anything to distract himself from the constant ache in his chest. He learned to read her subtle cues, the lingering glances, the gentle touches, the way her smile seemed to brighten whenever he was near. He waited. And waited. One rainy evening, months after his confession, Gladys called. Her voice was hesitant. "Ethan, I… I think I'm ready. He felt a surge of joy, so intense it almost knocked him off his feet. "Ready for what?" he asked, his voice trembling. "Ready to give us a try," she replied, a shy laugh escaping her lips. "I realized… I was afraid of losing our friendship. But I also realized that I feel the same way about you." The rain outside had stopped. A single ray of sunlight pierced through the clouds, illuminating his room. Ethan knew, with a certainty that washed over him like a warm wave, that this was the beginning of their own beautiful story. © 2025 Bennet Aloysious Taylor |
