INDULGENCE

INDULGENCE

INDULGENCE

With all these agitating thoughts running through my mind

I believe it is time for me to frequent a café nearby

T’s 5 0’clock and I am more than eager to leave my abode

Across the street and one more block there is a lovely café

That I have noticed

Candles atop white cloths and dim lighting

Anything too luminous shall  disturb my eyes

I prefer not to be conspicuous, therefore  my leggings

And a baggy sweater is splendid, disguise my ugly body

After a chilly walk I enter the café

A short, thin Asian woman greets me and directs me to a cozy table in the corner, ideal and inconspicuous

I order a glass of Chardonnay wine and start to

Survey the patrons

Mainly young couples, yet there appears to be

An elderly man with a French cap smoking a pipe

He cannot genuinely see me as he appears to sit sideways

From where I am located

What I can view is a young couple leaning in

Faces nearly touch, hands clasp together

Seemingly infatuated

It generates a smile on my face

And stirs me to reflect on my own infatuation

With my soldier with a bit of heartache  as well

At once, my head senses the wine is engaged

I giggle at the young couple, sensing no sadness now

I ponder about ordering one more glass

The waitress carries it on a small tray

I indulge, my cheeks are flush

I am afraid I resemble a clown

Oh dear, I anticipate some tipsy walking

On my return to the hotel

I pay the bill and gingerly arise from my chair

I take my time and amble to my abode

Christine greets me at the front door and assists me upstairs

At once, I am delighted to see my bed

I shall not hesitate to fall asleep swiftly tonight

And I must awaken early for my appointment tomorrow to see the doctor at 8:00AM

A chapter I had missed but am so glad I could read today.

She is alone but it feels good to read she's enjoying her own company. So much so that the youtful couple and their romance does not evoke any pangs in her. She's just enjoying her drinks and taking in the lovely ambience of the place. I relate to this so much, being a solo traveller often.

And I loved this chapter!

your welcome
Our heroine seeks to divert herself with an outing to a nearby cafe. She notices various other diners and orders chardonnay. A young couple reminds her of herself and her wounded soldier. Another chardonnay's effects make her realize she has overindulged and she returns to her hotel, where she has to be helped upstairs. Her situation is having its effects.

Hey Betty...

This is such a great, human write of an experience most of us can relate to ....I certainly can..:)

The almost guilty feelings of slipping into a local bar to sample its wares and observe its patrons and what they get up to...

The words flow well and the line that makes you refect about the soldier is interesting...
and then the ending which is gratitude for being home and being able to sleep well...

thanks for sharing this insight into your experience of life....

Little indulgence, some observed romance, contemplating life and work, resting for an appointment; you are a true story talker and teller; you pack lots of detail and meanings in short sentences.
Wow!

It's such a joy to re.read your words, to re-discover such a tale and of course, knowing this time, the fine research you did to hug your novel and make it reality rather than mere letters. Grand words, Betty.

Thank you, dear and truly valued friend.
Dear Betty. We do need to have some fun sometimes. I prefer a beer and whiskey shot. I enjoyed the tale. In my young days. I like to watch people. Now I seek quiet and my garden. Good morning from Michigan. I hope you are enjoying the days of Spring.

i am thank you dear John….😊
In hours of relaxation when the mind is free to drift we often see ourselves in what is around us as the couple in love when one misses it. A beautiful portrayal of letting go. Nicely imaged and structured with great flow.

Don't we all need that little bit of indulgence to make our "normality" a bit more bearable?
Sometimes we just need that normalcy of people getting on with their everyday to feel less we are the only ones and more of were in it together. Or maybe you were just going stir crazy looking at the same walls! 😃
