CAUGHT

CAUGHT

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

bloody war

"

In the dark of night

sirens scream to warn

lights flare like fiery shooting stars

which swoop down on cities and countryside

decimating everything in its path

Innocents go about their daily lives no more

prisoners of war, they desperately wish to win

yet with little sacrifice

first siren, second, then down to their cramped bunkers

damp underground spaces of worried faces

no revelation of war’s end

when they can resume normalcy?

My American 22-year-old Grandson

is one of those worried faces

how will he get to his sister’s wedding on time

the trip of a lifetime, to end day after war began

now a prisoner of chaos

caught in a conflict he understands

yet there is no way out

airspace shut

when will he return home?

I pray there will be a ceasefire soon

innocent Americans in a bloody war

I am heart-broken

I see from other comments that your grandson was caught in the Iran/Israel conflict, but is now out of danger. Glad to hear it. The world is a very dangerous place now.

Praying and hoping your grandson will be knocking on a door to a hug and cheer very, very soon.
War is the evil one would think the past would have proved does absolutely nothing for Mankind.
Had it worked the first time, peace would have held its place forever.

Such sad but fine writing, dear Betty.

I hope and pray your grandson reaches home safe and sound and hope that everyone caught there to find ease and refuge. These wars will never be justified of their cause. Sending you blessings and peace of heart my friend ❤️

War is hell and endless suffering; for those fighting it, for those living through it, for those waiting at home for loved ones who may never return and also for those who do return who live the battles over and over in their minds in dreams and flashbacks and for those suffering the loss of limbs, organs, sanity and sleep. Hell, all around.

Its always the innocents who get caught in the crossfire. I hope and pray the airspace opens soon and your grandson returns safely. We'll all be worried till then, dear Betty.

Violence is never the answer, yet far too often the preferred choice. I share your concern for your grandson and all others who're in peril. Always, I recall this song,
"And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation".
They're idealistic, I know, but still useful.

I'm afraid I didn't write it--Joni Michell did. One of the verses from "Woodstock".
