ZIP CODES

ZIP CODES

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

near and far

"

 ZIP CODES

From afar by phone or text

in different zip codes

the aura is one of friendship and distant hopes

a bond perhaps to ignite

we can be unattached and free

forget or not, date another

our conversation ends with

“Take care, and we’ll see each other soon”

In the same zip code, there is an atmosphere of intimacy

we are physically close and emotionally connected

our lives are entwined and safe

every day is a new adventure

not only from afar yet our senses fuse

we spend nights by the shore, alone together

the moon offers just enough light

so, we can see each other’s eyes

our torso’s like shadows

When we have to part and return to our zip codes

tears permeate our eyes, fear pervades our soul

hope is that we return to our privacy

that time is on our side

and our love for each other shall hold fast

What a creative and unique title and the poem! That's very clever! The words really reminded me of everyone in other lands from whom I had felt separation and distance until now. I really missed your creating imagination and feelings through your words. And i am amazed of the creativity of this! We put so many things into numbers, right? Aghh. But still i would rate this 100!

cleverly told. you make some interesting points. thoreau wrote that, “Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.” but in love nothing trumps being able to reach out and take hold in the present.

Hiii Bettyyy!!!

What a realistic poem about the challenges of dating in different zip codes and the same. But at the same time there are soo many positives of both.

I personally relate to "we can be unattached and free." This is why I enjoy my relationships with my friends and leaving it at that. At the same time I can understand "our lives are intertwined and safe." There is that safety feeling in being in a relationship close by.

Thanks for sharing such a realistic poem Bettyyyy!!! Have a good one🤗🤗🤗

Betty, this poem feels like it was written by heart. Just pure emotions. You managed to capture the contrast between distance and closeness in a relationship so well. Lines like, "Nights by the shore" and "The moon offers just enough light so, we can see each others eyes" stood out to me. The ending is quite the twist, full of longing yet quite hope. Thanks for writing such a lovely poem once again.

Dear Betty,

Zip codes do rule our lives, they decide so much of it! A very universally relatable poem and I related so much. Its about distance, its about longing, about meetings and the inevitable parting. Sometimes, we wish it wouldn't be so and that all out friends and loved ones shared the same zip code and yet life and its necessities don't always deem it so. The joy of togetherness and the sadness of parting in your words is so tangible and we can only look at the positive side of it - that we must part so we can meet again.

For me - as you well know and although the heading of this fine poem says, it is The heart that has a zip code: you meet a person via the various ways Life allows these days and POW! - a smile or something shared or an admission about this or that or like words are admired, etc' and - near automatically the two have created their own 'zip code' . Seems a few letters an/or numbers create a mooring for friends to sail happily from and to, then (hopefully!) they can sing and jig to jolly sea songs whatever sea they sail to/from or path they follow! Welcome aboard the Friendship voyage - yippeeee!

EM... the magic goes both ways!!! Sister!
A most interesting metaphor and concept that is more true than not. Closeness in time, space and emotions has a great deal to do with how we treat others. A lovely and most perceptive write Betty

Staying in touch with friends and family in today's technological-heavy world has never been simpler than it is today, but to keep in touch and stay connected, no matter the distance always feels like they are with you whenever you hear their familiar greeting.
Unless of course you are texting and the simple query of how are you feeling can be mangled by the predunctive toast monster... I mean the predictive text monster from "how are you feeling?" to "who are you fearing?"
On second thoughts, it's good to talk so why not dial that number instead of letting loose that preduntive toast monster!
