HOW TO MAKE SOMEONE LAUGH

They sit at the dining table hastily eating their supper

no words shared

two large stem glasses of cold Chardonnay sit on each side of the table

they fail to peer into each other’s eyes

she stares at a painting next to him on the opposite wall

he attempts to look out the window

a gloomy mood shrouds them

they have been trying to get pregnant for some time now

she is not giving up, although her disposition is unpredictable

One night he resolves to lift her spirits

he pours two glasses of wine to the rim

they sit, as usual, to eat their supper

at one moment, he slouches down to gaze through the wine glass at his wife

hence, he begins to giggle as he sees her distorted face through the oval glass

she offers him an alien look

then she slouches down and does the same

she breaks a smile then a loud chuckle

both become hysterical

the mood emerges from gloomy to bright

they bend forward to hold hands

and laugh until tear droplets stain their faces

now they gaze into each other’s eyes

perhaps this is a good sign

Great story! I loved it. You are so prolific I wonder if you sleep. I imagine your brain just churning with ideas.

Dear Betty,
A good marriage is made up of trials and good times, ups and downs and this is certainly a light and happy moment shared. Where there is love, there is thoughtfulness and he certainly loves and cares for her enough to think of something to make her laugh when the mood is so glum. A clear sign that this marriage is strong and will go on to be fruitful and blessed. You have such a beautiful mind.

Like a mini-movie of an evening with two souls moving from disconnected to connected....:)

The wine flowing and then the humour you inject....

/nice write Betty...

I think a lot of people know what it’s like to sit in silence with someone you love, feeling the weight of everything you can’t fix. And then, out of nowhere, a small, silly thing makes you both laugh until you can’t breathe. That moment... the holding hands, the eye contact it’s like remembering why you’re together in the first place. It’s such a real and beautiful shift from heavy to light.

Hi Betty,
You never stop amazing me with your poems. This is an amazing poem about two people who are in love but still feel emptiness in their hearts.

In today’s world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get pregnant day by day, and those who have kids are truly blessed.

I do hope so for the sake of their marriage; it is their desire for pregnancy. It really affects on marriages. I hope she gets pregnant. That will solidify the marriage.
An excellent take on this subject.
