ONE STEP AT A TIME

ONE STEP AT A TIME

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Life"s longings

"

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Often my heart cries out in frustration

yet we still retain what little desire lingers

after 40 years of marriage eagerness flies

like a bird migrating to another place

we are in another place

sweet hugs and soft kisses endure and we treasure those moments

When we met, we failed to cease the urge to touch each other

with obsession

dancing in the kitchen, strolling in the woods, swimming in the ocean

or a deep sensual plunge, tucked up under our covers in pure ecstasy

We murmured the words “ I love you” at whim, and it felt warm

Our intimacy sustained for many fine years

Now, the flames fade, our fervor dwindles

We are like birds who leave the nest

And fly to another venue

A place of warmth and tender memories

This is the first piece I have read from you I believe. It won't be the last I know. Well penned poetess. I have 31 years under my belt. It's an ebb and flow and you never give up on each other. I needed to read this this morning. Indeed I shall never give up on my best friend.

Hi again! I feel passion coming out of this write from all angles! The heart cries out in frustration and the author still holds on to the desire that lingers. Oh My Gosh! Be still my heart!
I don't see the author of a 40 year marriage. I see a young girl and a young boy in the freedom of passion! These kids have weathered storms! Yet, memories still abide in the heart of hearts.
Flames and fervor, just the words spark my blood! Keep this flame stoked!
Do not go silently...I forget the rest...But you can do it! LOVE AND PASSION PREVAIL!

Good to see you branch out from the soldier. This has a nice Old World charm to it not quite Romanticism but not modern either. Just pleasant.

This is such a beautiful and touching poem. It really shows the journey of love over many years in a very honest way..
I like how you describe both the passion of the early days and the gentle closeness that remains after so long..... The words feel warm and real, and they capture both the joy and the changes that come with time. Truly hearfel.
Lovely work, keep writing!

A touching write dear Betty. Together but without the intimacy and passion perhaps of those early days of hot love. I like how you have used the migrating birds in your lines. I sense the loss here which can cause pain. The aging process has its down falls. Beautiful poetry, tinged with sadness.

All ok my friend. Have a great weekend. 🌹
It is definitely heart breaking and there is a sense of ennui. This poem really captures an aged relationship. I really enjoyed the ending, unexpected and pleasant. "A place of Warmth and Tender memories"; that nest that may be cooling as we speak....

On this physical plane, change is inevitable. Our reasoning minds know this, but this doesn't lessen the pain when change alters that which we have valued so much over the years. The speaker here is feeling the reduction of intimacy that had for so long been a strong point of the marriage relationship. Advice is plentiful, so I will not give any other than to treasure what remains and to release as much as possible without inner resistance.

A beautiful heart-rending piece of poetry, Betty. The ending has such a gentle sense of forlorn, but isn't that just the way love is? Its most eternal moments are the ones of brevity. So mesmerized by this piece. CLE
