TOUCH

In winter I behold the Crepe Myrtle Tree

in all of its nudity

yet it settles into the earth with grace and nobility

in summer different hues blossom and flutter in a gentle breeze

so delicate they may tumble

it compels my mind to wander to my youth

and the summers we spent deep in the mountains

those lovelies bountiful on our land

Now I gaze more attentively at the smooth bark

trace my fingers up and down its silkiness

akin to woman’s smooth skin

convinced that this tree shall rest here

long after my demise

How short is our stay Betty and how temporary what we do. I too look at a tree I planted twenty years ago and think it will be here long after I am gone will anyone know I planted it?

You are most welcome Betty
A very unique tree that is not native here, the bald cypress is a rare tree here but they grow and they are special too

thank you for your fine review!

Really lovely Betty. I quite enjoyed this. Your memories of youth, time spent deep in the mountains, made me reflect on my own life. Growing up I lived so close to, or actually within nature. I miss that. It seems that the responsibilities of adulthood tend to take us away from nature-jobs in the city, etc. Plus population growth here has eliminated so much of the natural woodlands and wild areas within driving distance. We spent so much time in the woods as kids, cutting firewood when older, that I know many types of bark. I even spent some of my summer months peeling bark from cascara trees which we sold to a pharmaceutical company. I can vividly see and feel the smooth bark of your tree. Well written.

Love the allegory here...two meanings at once. You do it so smoothly, as smooth as the woman's skin.

Oh yes, here in Southern Illiniois about 5 miles from me we have a reserve and guess what it is called?

A Touch of Nature.

Very popular hiking spot.

Touch...such a key part of our experience as humans....:)

This is a short, but deep poem about our connection to nature....

I likes these lines:

Now I gaze more attentively at the smooth bark
trace my fingers up and down its silkiness
akin to woman’s smooth skin
convinced that this tree shall rest here
long after my demise

Just imagine if trees could tell us their story......
