THE LONG JOURNEY

THE LONG JOURNEY

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

in the end

"

The Long Journey

We amble upon this path

prior to our last breaths

doves of peace follow us

Our remarkable love

envelops us throughout our journey

passion sealed tight

not a fragment disappears

Our progeny

and theirs

shall reap the merits

of our contentment

We amble upon this path

laden with memories

the stars safeguard us

and celebrate our long life together

swaddled in the shadow of the moon

Yes, as your first line suggests we do amble upon this path, yet i find the more I amble now, the more I appreciate the view. As a kid all I remember is zooming around from place to place with any scenery change only being a blur.
I remember Billy Connolly asking his kids when they were small what the best part of their trip around scotland was, way before he owned a castle there. So they decided to go into whisper mode on the back-seat of the car to decide. Their answer was better than any punchline he could come up with.... the episode of Rosie and Jim when Jim got lost was their answer! 😃

Ps... Rosie and Jim is an old kids show where two dolls, Rosie and Jim, live on a canal boat.
That there is no destination, but the journey is all important is one of the truisms this poem resounds with.

It is all about the journey Ken, thank you for your fine review

This is the 2nd time I have read something from you that I felt liked the words were hugging me. It is nearing the anniversary of some deaths of a few near and dears to me. This gives me comfort. Beautiful words. Thank you

I don't know if this one represents the speaker's personal experience or is meant as a general description of a happy relationship. Whatever, it describes an ideal we all should seek. Too many fall short.

Thanks John, yes most of it is personal, but could relate to many

Romantic in its style this poem utilizes vivid natural images to evoke deep feelings of ties of generations and the drive of passion and the creation of life that will follow us. It finishes with a great pairing of two images a celebration of a long life and swaddling an image associated with birth and newborns and casts it all in the shadow of the moon. Very nice

You are most welcome Betty
I love your poem, the journey wrapped in all these special moments mentioned. The final two lines are like the red ribbon on a Christmas present.

A beautiful review, much appreciated, Thank you!

There’s a weathered tenderness here—love not as blaze, but as steady lantern light carried through the years.
It feels earned, this quiet amble beneath the stars, two souls walking past time without letting go.
