The Cutting Pledge

The Cutting Pledge

A Poem by FreeSoulLoveDance

With this knife
I take in pain
To cut my self
Deeply to the bone
Never cry a tear
It only weakens you more
Kiss her deeply after it's done
Never say sorry
Never scream a word
Hand her the knife
As she too cuts
Drink each other's blood
With a mix of vodka
Say a prayer to the God
Look deep into the eyes
Kiss each other good bye

This poem leads me on several tangents. First came the thought of someone so devoted to self-pain as to be conditioned to not crying, feeling that showing tears may mean more than sharing an emotion. Then the inclusion of a partner in this what I can only call a ritual, without apologizing for creating a mutual pain. Drinking blood from each other indicates an intimacy but the vodka adds a touch of either need or celebration. To have what seems an intimate moment be the last, for whatever reason, raises the ritualism to a prayer in itself. I think this is very well written. Whereas with fiction, you are told to write what you know, I find in poetry you write what you envision.
