Before the First Star Declaration of Inanna

Before the First Star Declaration of Inanna

A Poem by Curly Grace

I rise from the tide before the first star

older than Venus, older than longing

I am the hunger that cannot be named

the fire that bends the heart and shatters the body

I have walked the underworld naked before gates

stripped of crowns, of raiment, of command

Each loss became a spark

each hook a pulse

and when I returned I returned in flame

all shadows consumed by the ache of my desire

I touch and empires tremble

I whisper and kings and shepherds bow alike

I take what pleases me and leave none untouched

Art, law, song, stolen, stolen, offered again

to the brave who dare to meet my eyes

I am love yes but do not mistake me for mercy

I am war I am fever I am ruin and rapture

I am the rush of blood

the tremor in your limbs

the fruit you taste before dawn

I am shepherd and king

land and star

the first pulse of power

the oldest fire you cannot tame

I am Inanna

I am desire

I am everything you feared

and all you ache to hold

Think she was ticked at Dumuzi? This glows nothing shy of pure Mesopotamia, pure Babylonian, Ishtar in reincarnation, in strength, art, love, war, beauty, politics, influence, inspiration..am I missing anything? Is there an end to her powers? Her descent to the underworld is both compelling and amazing and her return even more resplendent. I'm smiling in the blades of your tribute. In the center of its impact. You enjoy mythology like a sun its core, you are fused in a manner that has me appreciating, welcoming, if not questioning that these poems are not also a reincarnation to these ancient eras.
