1. Television Watching

A Poem by Brett Hernan

We’ve come for the soft drink fables.

The horse walked slowly

from the cool brick building

to an air-conditioned all-night

movie theater, which was almost a harmony.

Humming some strange soft tune. The sound

of the wind ripping on the bud spiked branches.

Tomorrow they burst. A balloon filled with enough

gas to keep an evenly weighted object attached

to it held stationary at mid-chest level. A novel

method of storage by candle light. By the way,

could you use the door next time?

Anxiously reclining on the mattress

in the back of the panel van eating

a split scarlet rubber meat blob (a.k.a. hot dog)

and synthetically engineered one-two-five,

right now there’s a yellow rose twirling

as it descends into the pale blue jam.
