The Midnight Mind Game

It's dark outside, the stars are out
The moon is in place, that means lights out
But this is the time of day that I dread
When I have to lay down
And all my thoughts wake up in my head 
I lay there for hours, what seems like forever
Letting my brain keep working its magic
The thoughts never stop
My mind never sleeps
My dark lonely thoughts, don't even let me dream
I wish there was a way
That I could escape 
But my mind knows me too well
To ever let me get away 
So here comes the loneliness 
Here comes the regret 
Here comes the memories 
Here comes all the what-ifs
And anything else that my mind wants to think
It's a midnight mind game
My brain needs a shrink
I despise this game, but my thoughts seem to love it
So no goodnight for me again
No happy dreams or deep sweet sleep
The midnight mind game is killing me
