How the darkness can slip its way into our every being, but our faith can save us.

                                     

                              While you were away.
               
                      While you were away , they have passed some laws,
                      and in our throats , he sank his claws.
                      While you were away , his troops still trained ,
                      and in our hearts , we felt the pain.
                      While you were away , he swayed our views ,
                      and in the church  , grew empty pews.
                      While you were away , our morals grew lax ,
                      and in our soul , he planted his ax.
                      While you were away , hate bred hate ,
                      and in our minds , he sealed our fate.
                      While you were away , we came to know ,
                      that in our faith , we never let you go.

When we allow Jesus to be out of our life, floods of darkness are able to come rushing in and overtake the good. Your words are hard hitting and really make a point!
God help us to never let Jesus be out of our way for long - He is our lifeline!! May we ever remember He is Lord and Master of all and place our faith in Him!!!

Very interesting, and good points you bring out. As someone below said, I like the style, the repetition of the first line. It has a good flow, and generally good wording, though some cliches (like "sealed our fate") could be removed to good effect. All in all, thumbs up.

Yes, it was "in our minds". Are you saying you purposely used the cliche to highlight how false it all was? I can see an argument for a cliche when the cliche is needed for tone purposes. I hadn't gotten the impression that you'd used it for this purpose, though.
